Inspired by the 2010 international adoption scandal that led to the temporary suspension of all US adoptions of Russian children, The Firebird is a new musical exploring the mother-child relationship between Paige, a young single woman and Kodiak, a young Russian orphan. The Firebird dissects a story in which right and wrong might seem obvious and asks the audience to consider the complexities of a mother’s unthinkable choice.
Burns and Staskel write a magically realistic story through these characters' dreams - Paige's contain songs and spoken dialogue, while Kodiak’s dreams are painted with broader strokes, brought to life through narrative modern dance and lush choral singing. Our reading showcases an incredible cast led by musical director Max Mamon with multimedia of our dance workshop choreographed by Franklin Barefoot. The project has been in development for 3 years, and we are excited to share the latest revision with a great cast, including 12-year-old Eli Carlson as our Kodiak. Please join us! We'd love to hear what you think.
